Cream of wheat is a delicious yet super simple meal.
Make it even better with freshly milled wheat! Use whatever wheat berry you like. I generally use soft white wheat berries.
This is a wonderful meal straight from your prepper pantry because you can use your wheat as the base and then whatever you have on hand to add to it!
Freshly Milled Cream of Wheat
Wonderful and delicious cream of wheat made from freshly milled wheat!
Ingredients
- 1 cup coarsely milled wheat about 2/3 cup of wheat berries of your choice
- 3 cups water
- whatever you want to add to it!
Instructions
- Mill wheat berries to coarse setting - about the same coarseness as grits.
- Add water to a pot, bring to boil.
- When water is boiling, add wheat to the pot a little at a time whisking vigorously the whole time. If you dump it all in at once or stop whisking, flour will clump together.
- Whisk wheat about 1 minute until all lumps are out and wheat is cooked.
- Scoop in a bowl and add whatever toppings you like!
Notes
I love adding some milk, cinnamon, diced apples, and brown sugar to our cream of wheat.
Other toppings can be bananas, berries, honey, peanut butter, shredded coconut, use your imagination!

This is my go to cream of wheat recipe now! It’s so quick, easy and delicious! Even my toddler loves it. I like that it’s interchangeable with any type of wheat 🙂
Do you sift after grinding, like you did on the grits video?
Nope! It’s great as is.
I recently sifted some soft white to make a cake. Will it work out okay if I use what I sifted off to make cream of wheat? I don’t want to waste it, but I’m not sure how to use it… Thanks!
You can, it’ll just may take a bit longer to cook.
This works great with sprouted grains as well. I’ve use spelt and rye 50/50. Thanks Felicia for the recipe!
Can I store in refrigerator after cooked without losing nutritional value?
Yep, for the most part. Like all real food, it will eventually go bad even in the fridge, but it will help it to last longer.
Can I cook the wheat with milk instead of water?
Probably, but milk burns unlike water, so watch it.
Can I do this in my rice cooker?
I don’t see why not. Try it and let us know how it turns out.
Made this recipe tonight. I used dried whole milk to make a cup and added more water as it was getting thicker. Soooooooo good. Doesn’t take much time to make. Thank you
This is so tasty! My husband and I have really enjoyed this since we have started fresh milling our wheat. True comfort food. Thank you for the recipe!
My mom grew up in the South and would make cream of wheat when we were growing up. This reminds me of my childhood, so good!
The very best real food that’s fast food. Keeps me full for hours.
