All hail the Great Northern Bean! Probably one of the more popular dried bean.
This recipe is STUPID simple, yet delicious and hardy. If you’re looking for comfort food without the fuss, this is it.
Tweak it however you want! This really is the best on cold days (yes…we get a few of those here in Florida) with hot fresh cornbread made from freshly milled corn and freshly milled wheat! But we eat it on hot days here too!

Smokey Great Northern Beans
Ingredients
- 1 lb dried Great Northern Beans soaked or unsoaked
- 1/2 onion, diced can substitute 1-2 TB onion powder
- 1 TB garlic powder can substitute with 2-3 cloves minced garlic
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
- bacon, ham hock, smoked pork necks, or liquid smoke Add to taste, if using liquid smoke use 1/2 tsp - 1tsp
Instructions
- Soak beans, if you choose to. It's not necessary
- Add all ingredients into pot. Cover with water about 1inch above beans
- Bring to boil, then cover and simmer until done. About 2 1/2 hours.
