This recipe uses dried great northern beans. With liquid smoke or a smoked pork, it gives the beans a delicious smokey flavor. These can be a great side dish or a meal by themselves with some fresh, homemade corn bread! This is a very simple meal, but great comfort food.
1TBgarlic powdercan substitute with 2-3 cloves minced garlic
saltto taste
pepperto taste
bacon, ham hock, smoked pork necks, or liquid smokeAdd to taste, if using liquid smoke use 1/2 tsp - 1tsp
Instructions
Soak beans, if you choose to. It's not necessary
Add all ingredients into pot. Cover with water about 1inch above beans
Bring to boil, then cover and simmer until done. About 2 1/2 hours.
Notes
FREEZER MEAL:Cook entire recipe, cool down, then put in freezer safe container. When ready to serve, just thaw and heat up.CROCK POT:Combine all ingredients into crock pot. Cover with water about 1-2 inches above beans (more to be safe to make sure beans won't burn).Cook on low for about 5-6 hours. High for about 3-4 hours.TO SERVE:These can be a meal on their own with some fresh, homemade cornbread or they make an excellent side dish.
