The one downside to off-grid cooking is you think you can’t have desserts.

You would be wrong, my friend!

This is a very easy dessert that can be baked in a grill or even a dutch oven in a bed of coals!

Using ingredients from a prepper pantry, this wonderful apple crisp (or whatever-fruit-you-want-to-use-crisp) will be a crowd pleaser!

Ingredients

  • 6 apples - peeled, sliced or diced or 1 quart canned apples, drained
  • 2 TB sugar
  • 1 3/4 tsp cinnamon, divided
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice when using canned apples, I omit this because my canned apples already have lemon juice. This is just to help the apples not to brown. Completely optional. Many times I skip this step.
  • 1 cup brown sugar or sucanat
  • 3/4 cup oats rolled or quick oats can be used.
  • 3/4 cup freshly milled soft white wheat flour mill about 1/2 cup of soft white wheat grain to equal 3/4 cup flour. Can also substitute with spelt, kamut, or hard white wheat.
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, diced into tiny pieces can also use lard. Best if lard is cold. Will have a slightly different flavor than with butter.
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. If using a grill to bake, get that preheated to 350 degrees.
  • In cast iron pan (or baking dish), lightly grease with lard or oil
  • In mixing bowl, combine chopped/sliced apples, sugar, 3/4 tsp cinnamon, and lemon juice (if using). Stir to combine. If using canned apples, make sure they are drained!
  • In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, salt. Whisk together.
  • Add diced cold butter to the flour and oats mixture and cut in butter with pastry cutter, two forks, or your hands until butter is mixed and resembles pea-sized crumbs.
  • Place apples in bottom of cast iron or baking dish. Spread to make them even.
  • Spread topping over apples and spread until even.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for about 40-50 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. When I baked this in a grill, it took about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Much harder to regulate temperature with a wood fire!
  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

This is a very simple dessert using shelf stable ingredients (if your apples are canned)! Include real whole grains from your prepper pantry!
Apples can be substituted for berries, peaches, whatever fruit you like!
