1 1/2tsplemon juicewhen using canned apples, I omit this because my canned apples already have lemon juice. This is just to help the apples not to brown. Completely optional. Many times I skip this step.
1cupbrown sugaror sucanat
3/4cupoatsrolled or quick oats can be used.
3/4cupfreshly milled soft white wheat flourmill about 1/2 cup of soft white wheat grain to equal 3/4 cup flour. Can also substitute with spelt, kamut, or hard white wheat.
1/2cupcold butter, diced into tiny piecescan also use lard. Best if lard is cold. Will have a slightly different flavor than with butter.

Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. If using a grill to bake, get that preheated to 350 degrees.
In cast iron pan (or baking dish), lightly grease with lard or oil
In mixing bowl, combine chopped/sliced apples, sugar, 3/4 tsp cinnamon, and lemon juice (if using). Stir to combine. If using canned apples, make sure they are drained!
In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, salt. Whisk together.
Add diced cold butter to the flour and oats mixture and cut in butter with pastry cutter, two forks, or your hands until butter is mixed and resembles pea-sized crumbs.
Place apples in bottom of cast iron or baking dish. Spread to make them even.
Spread topping over apples and spread until even.
Bake at 350 degrees F for about 40-50 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. When I baked this in a grill, it took about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Much harder to regulate temperature with a wood fire!
Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
This is a very simple dessert using shelf stable ingredients (if your apples are canned)! Include real whole grains from your prepper pantry!Apples can be substituted for berries, peaches, whatever fruit you like!
