Best Ever Baked Beans
Ingredients
- 1 lbs dry white beans such as Navy beans or Great Northern beans (can also use kidney beans)
- 1/3 cup molasses
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 3-4 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 3 cups hot water
- 1/8 tsp liquid smoke flavoring
- 1-2 tbsp lard (optional)
- 1 medium chopped onion
Instructions
- Place beans in large pot and cover with 2 inches of water; bring to a boil, remove from heat, cool, then drain.
- Wisk together molasses, brown sugar, mustard, ground cloves, liquid smoke, and 3 cups hot water.
- Coat the bottom of a Dutch oven or large pot with lard.
- Layer over with half of the drained beans. Add all of the chopped onion in a layer.
- Top with another layer of beans and pour the molasses water mixture over the beans to just cover the beans.
- Cover and bake in oven at approximately 300°F until the beans are tender (8-10 hours). Check the water level a few hours in, and if the beans need more water, add some.
- Serve the following day for optimal flavor (this dish ages well).
Notes
This recipe is perfect for a side dish. But if you want to serve as a main course or have a large family, I would double or even triple this recipe.
