Ingredients

  • 4 cups old, stale bread, cut into 1 inch cubes (NOT moldy)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees F
  • Add cubed bread to food processor and process until bread crumbs are to the size you like.
  • Spread bread crumbs evenly into one layer on a sheet pan.
  • Bake for 5 minutes in middle of the oven.
  • After 5 minutes, stir and bake another 5 minutes until bread is lightly browned and feels dry to the touch.
  • Once lightly browned and feels dry, bake another 2-5 minutes to make it completely dry.
  • Remove from oven, allow bread crumbs to cool to cool on the sheet pan for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Transfer to air-tight container if using within a week, OR transfer to the freezer to have bread crumbs ready to go when you need them.

Notes

  1. If you need bread crumbs now, but only have fresh bread no worries! Cut bread into slices first, place in toaster or the 300 degree oven to dry out a bit. Allow to cool completely, then proceed with instructions above.
  2. Don't have a food processor? Skip steps 2 and 3 above. Just cut the bread into about 1 inch cubes and follow the steps for toasting and drying out above. Then, once cooled, transfer cubed bread to a Ziploc bag. Seal it up well, then use a rolling pin to beat the devil out of it until all bread has been crumbled.
  3. Good news - this recipe works for croutons too!!! Instead of processing 1 inch bread cubes into bread crumbs, just bake/toast the bread cubes as instructed above and you have delicious croutons for your salad!
