If you have a flaker and already roll your own oats for oatmeal, you can do the same with hulled barley!
I find that hulled barley flakes into a bit smaller and thinner flakers than oats. You may find it takes less time to cook than rolled oats.
This makes a great breakfast and you can customize it however you like!
Or use the flaked barley uncooked and put in your favorite granola recipe!

Rolled Barley Flakes
Equipment
- 1 flaker I use the flaker attachment for my Bosch Universal Mixer Plus
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup hulled barley this will flake into about 1 cup, maybe a little more. See notes
- 3 cups water
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Take your hulled barley and roll it out into flakes just like you do oats. 1 cup of hulled barley rolls to about 1 3/4 cup rolled barley flakes.
- To make your own barley "oatmeal", boil 3 cups of water with 1/2 tsp salt.
- Once water is boiling, add 1 cup of rolled barley flakes. Reduce heat to medium low and cook for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occassionally.
- Once cooked, remove from heat and let stand for about 2 minutes.
- Serve however you like! Add fruit, milk, honey, sugar, etc.

I rolled Egyptian hulled barley and made it in the microwave. It was very tasty. The flavor was better than oatmeal. Next time I think I’ll try cream of barley.
What if you don’t have a way to flake barley ? Can u eat it like cream of wheat?
I don’t see why not 🙂
Can I use pearled barley instead of hulled barley?
