2pie crusts made with freshly milled wheatsee notes below for the recipe!
4cupspeeled, cored, sliced applesThis is about 4-5 pounds of apples to equal 4 cups. I prefer granny smith apples, but any apple will do!
1/2cupsugarI prefer organic cane sugar
1/4cupfreshly milled soft white wheat flour
1tspcinnamon
1/4tspsalt
2TBunsalted buttercut into slices or dime-sized bits
Instructions
Peel, core, and slice apples (see notes below)
Put sliced apples in pot, cover with water, cook until apples are soft. About 10 minutes.
Drain apples in colander. Add drained apples back to a bowl.
To the apples, add your sugar, freshly milled flour, cinnamon, and salt. Gently mix until it is all incorporated.
Roll out bottom pie crust and place in pie pan. Add the apple mixture to the pie pan.
Place sliced or cut up butter on top of apple pie mixture.
Carefully roll out the top pie crust. Place on top of bottom pie crust and apple mixture.
Crimp edges of pie crust (whatever design you like). Then cut slits on top of pie crust so pie can vent while cooking.
Place in preheated 450 degree oven and bake for about 40-50 minutes.
Remove from oven, allow to cool about 10-15 minutes before slicing. Enjoy!
Notes
A note about the apples: you do not have to cook them if you don't want. I find I like the texture better when they are cooked. If you are NOT cooking the apples, make sure apples are sliced thin to ensure they bake all the way. Otherwise, if you are cooking the apple the slices can be thicker.
